Training
Tips For Getting Started:
1. Before beginning a running program, make sure your dog receives a
clean bill of health from the veterinarian and has completed all vaccinations and tests
for heartworms.
2. Because smaller breeds mature more quickly than larger breeds, small
dogs should be at least eight months old, large dogs at least one year old, and giant
breeds at least one and one half years old before beginning any type of running program.
3. Start by running at an easy pace three days a week for 20 minutes.
Use walking as both warm-up and cool-down activities. If your dog has been
inactive, alternative two minutes of walking during the entire 20 minutes. Walking
is best for over-weight dogs.
Some dogs will try to hide their weariness to please their masters.
Watch for subtle changes. If your dog starts lagging or pants excessively, slow the
pace or stop and give him a break. Follow this program for eight to ten weeks,
allowing your pet to build up its paw pads. As the dog builds up his endurance,
additional time can be added.
Remember: The purpose of work-outs is to maintain your dog's fitness and good
health, not to log an excessive number of miles.
Tips For Safe Running:
1. Keep your dog on leash when you run with him. This allows you
to effectively control the animal's gate.
2. Traffic-free roads or soft paths make the best running areas for
dogs. Concrete and blacktop should be avoided, especially during summer months when
these surfaces get hot.
3. When forced to run on streets, run facing traffic with your dog
heeling on your left, where the dog is less likely to interfere with cars.
4. Be consistent with your commands and use lots of praise.
5. When crossing busy intersections, stop, tell your dog to sit, then
proceed when clear.
6. Many running tracks and other areas, such as beaches, do not allow
dogs. Respect the rules.
7. Consider taking the day off if the weather is extremely hot or
cold. Give your dog water every 20 minutes on warm days.
